A Critic’s Review Of General Hospital: Plot Ploy, Conspiracy & Shenanigans

The author’s opinions are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

General Hospital Critic's Review for December 5 – December 9, 2022
 Comments

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: A Critic’s Personal Highlight

Soooooo…Heather Webber (Alley Mills) and Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom)/Hazel and Richard are Esme Prince’s (Avery Kristen Pohl) parents — does this jive with anything previously established on General Hospital? The one thing I can buy is Ryan chopping wood in the moonlight. That seems right.

Would it have killed General Hospital head honchos, Chris and Dan/Dan and Chris, to make Esme’s birth mother the woman that Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner) witnessed Ryan kill way back when? And sure, that would require Esme to be thirtyish rather than the twenty-something she’s been portrayed as, but the tacking on of a few years would hardly be a Leena Klammer/Esther Albright-Esque shocker. Also, it would make the most logical sense, so I can see why it wasn’t the avenue the duo chose to explore.

Further GH Musings

* I am so, so glad that somebody FINALLY remembered — and the fact that it was Laura Collins (Genie Francis) made it all the sweeter — that what the Cassadines were really after in 1981 wasn’t the Ice Princess itself but what was hidden in the secret compartment in the base on the stand on which the diamond was mounted. About damn time.

* Maybe it’s the writing for the character in general, maybe it’s Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s inability to dial back the noxious petulance in particular, but whatever the case, I’m just not connecting with Spencer Cassadine and his plight.

* Thanks to spoilers and my ability to clock a plot contrivance from 80 paces, it’s a foregone conclusion that Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) will claim to be pregnant with Nicholas Cassadine’s (Marcus Coloma) baby. To the writers of General Hospital, I ask, WHY?! Has Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) not proven himself quite adept at scheming with the best — or worst — of them? Did he not, a few weeks previous, help Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) abscond from police custody? I’m sure he wouldn’t like the idea of keeping Esme locked up in a tower until she gave birth, but I’m also sure that he could be easily persuaded to keep mum and even join the conspiracy.

Speaking of Anna, I can’t help but feel that GH really missed the boat by not throwing Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight) into the mix properly. Those three are a hoot together and I’d love to have seen more of their shenanigans in the field.

* Why is it that Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) only went deaf at the exact moment that Rory Cabrera (Michael Kruse) declared his love for her, necessitating him to practically shout the declaration at the exact moment that Spencer entered the restaurant? Oh, right, plot contrivance!
