In the March 3 episode of State of Mind, General Hospital star Maurice Benard sat down with his co-star Carolyn Hennesy, who has played Benard’s on-screen attorney Diane Miller for 17 years. Amidst their friendly banter, the two got honest about sobriety and mental health, while Hennesy revealed one of the greatest moments she had with Benard on GH.

A Great Moment On GH

When the topic of GH came up between the two actors, Benard noted that he and Hennesy had done some “deeper stuff” on the show lately. Hennesy responded in her typical comedic fashion and began pressuring Benard to tell TPTB at GH that he wanted more scenes with her.

Hennesy went on to reveal what she considers “one of the great moments” in her time on the soap. The actress admitted she loves Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) and Tristan Rogers (Robert), but a recent scene she loved happened between now and the last time she appeared on State of Mind in 2021.

“Diane grilling Sonny, her boss…what is she going to do?” Hennesy recalled. The episode the two reminisced on was from May 26, 2022, when Sonny took the stand at Nina’s (Cynthia Watros) visitation hearing. “Looking at you…it was one of the great moments for me in my 17 years on this show,” Hennesy told Benard.

23 Years Sober

The biggest talking point of the episode was Hennesy’s sobriety, revealing she is 23 years sober. The two dove into her past, the downward spiraling drinking sent her on, and the book that she says saved her life.

“These are life lessons, not just ‘don’t drink’ lessons,” Hennesy insisted when recounting the steps she took to better herself. “Everything truly important that I have accomplished in my life has been in the last 23 years.”

The actress admitted she wasn’t sure if she would still be here had she not stopped drinking, remembering the “bad choices” she once made, even admitting there was a point when she was drinking and driving.

Hennesy thanks her sponsor, attending AA meetings all over the world, and the book Living Sober for saving her life and helping her live to see her career, advising that to achieve sobriety, you must “learn to live sober.”
