General Hospital fans have been down this road before. In the summer of 1980, when Scotty Baldwin punched Luke Spencer for having raped Scotty’s wife, Laura Webber Baldwin, and sent him flying overboard from the yacht where Luke was supposed to marry mafia princess Jennifer Smith.
A few years later on General Hospital, Luke (Anthony Geary) was presumed dead in an avalanche, leaving pregnant girlfriend Holly Sutton (Emma Samms), to marry Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) in order to stay in the country. So what we’re saying is, Luke has done this play possum act before. Is he really most sincerely dead this time around? What over 2,000 soap watching experts had to say:
Luke Spencer will never die, 60% of the audience asserts. This is a man who has the personality to spare. Which is basically the same as having nine lives. He’s beaten the mob. He’s beaten the Cassadines. And he lived long enough to decide the mafia was A-OK, as long as a pal of his like Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) was running it, and not some low-life like Frank Smith. Luke Spencer can do whatever he wants. And he wants to live forever.
Doesn’t matter, 26% of you shrug. Whether or not Luke Spencer is dead or alive, Geary is never coming back to Port Charles, so the question is academic. We can hope this leads to a great story for the veteran characters like Laura (Genie Francis), Robert, Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), and Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman). Nobody on General Hospital needs Luke for that.
Luke Spencer ran his course decades ago, and 14% of voters haven’t missed him all these past years. Luke ruins everything he touches, including children, women, and hairstyles. Killing him off off-screen is a great way to make clear that it’s the end of a long-buried era.
