General Hospital celebrated its 58th anniversary at the beginning of this month. The show, created by Frank and Doris Hursley, premiered on ABC on April 1, 1963. Originally, a 30-minute black and white drama, the drama on GH centered primarily around the hospital.
Years later, the show shifted to both color and the hour format (after a brief run as a 45-minute drama from mid-1976 to early 1978). The late John Beradino and Emily McLaughlin headlined the soap as Dr. Steve Hardy and Jessie Brewer, R.N. Today, Steve’s granddaughter Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) works as a nurse at General Hospital.
Many GH actors have been on the show since the 1970s. They include Genie Francis (Laura), Kin Shriner (Scotty), Jackie Zeman (Bobbie), Leslie Charleson (Monica), and Denise Alexander (Lesley).
GH has won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series a record 13 times, more than any other daytime serial. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
