As a cast member of All My Children, Susan Lucci (Erica) worked on a soap that delivered many important social messages to its audience. She may not be on our screens daily anymore, but the Daytime Emmy-winning actress is still active in issues that affect Americans everywhere.
“Hi, I’m Susan Lucci,” the fan-favorite began in an Instagram video that can be seen below. “I’m a national volunteer for the American Heart Association. A year ago, I was in Washington D.C. to lobby Congress to end the predatory practice of surprise medical billing. These surprise medical bills from specialist doctors or third-party providers have already thrown millions of American’s into financial disaster, and [it occurs] when they are most vulnerable.
“More than half of Americans have received surprise medical bills,” Lucci continues. “These bills can amount to hundreds or thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. It’s outrageous that Congress has still not acted to protect patients and as we go forward in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever to protect patients against unexpected costs. It’s time for Congress to act,” Lucci concludes.
In 2019, Lucci had two stents put in her heart after nearly suffering a cardiac event. Since then, she has been outspoken about medical and heart issues.
“THANK YOU!!!” said @ocfarmer_eileen. “As a recipient of a surprise medical bill for my daughter, I can attest to the financial hardship it imposes. It’s VERY scary and I suppose Congress doesn’t care is because a) it doesn’t affect them; they can afford to pay b) they have better healthcare than the rest of us c) they’re too out of touch our money d) all the above. Thank you for helping make our voices heard!!!”
Lucci, an original cast member of AMC, arguably is the genre’s most popular actor. Even people who’ve never watched a soap know who Lucci is! Erica suffered many medical maladies over the years including facial lacerations from a car accident, drug addiction, fainting, blackouts, being stabbed by Annie Lavery (Melissa Claire Egan), and an injury in a quarry explosion. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check local listings for air times.
