A Critic’s Review of General Hospital: (Hypocritical) Papa, Don't Preach

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: A Critic’s Week In Review

Who thought they’d live to see the day that Spencer Freakin’ Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) deigned to serve his fellow man? And who would have ever guessed that he’d actually be good at it? When this kid puts his mind to something, he can make magic happen.

If only he could bring himself to accept Nikolas Cassadine’s (Marcus Coloma) marriage to Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West); it’d probably help if he didn’t have Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl), General Hospital’s latest female cuckoo, pouring poison into his ear at every available opportunity.

It would also help matters if Nikolas wasn’t such a big ole hypocrite. He wants to punish Spencer for harassing Ava, but he doesn’t want to take any responsibility for hiring that hitman to shoot Hayden Barnes (Rebecca Budig); and Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) had such high hopes for her nephew; he was the great hope of the Cassadines; the one who she was sure wouldn’t succumb to the madness and evil that afflicts so many of the family’s male heirs (yes, we’re looking at you Mikkos).

And speaking of big ole hypocrites…can someone, anyone, please ask Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell), General Hospital’s most boring schemer, why it’s okay for Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) to murder AJ Quartermaine in cold blood, why it’s okay for Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) to run around and shoot all and sundry, but it isn’t okay for Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) to keep Sonny hidden away from his family for a few lousy months?

Also, is there anybody else out there who’s pretty tired of hearing everybody blame Nina for those nine months that Sonny lived as Mike? He’d been playing barback for many a moon before Nina showed up and recognized him.

Additionally, can someone explain exactly how anyone can prosecute Nina for crimes that she didn’t actually commit? Last we checked, being a morally bankrupt person isn’t a chargeable offense – and if it were, the majority of Port Charles would be facing starring down some stiff sentences in Pentonville.

Further GH Musings

* Disappointment of the Week: Gladys Corbin’s (Bonnie Burroughs) short-sightedness. We get that she was royally ticked off at Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms), but why decide to blow up Brook Lynn Quartermaine’s (Amanda Setton) spot, rather than continue to blackmail her into submission; heck, she could have even got Brook Lynn to order Maxie to apologize for her treatment of Gladys, and maybe grovel just a tiny bit. Wouldn’t that have been an act of much sweeter revenge?

Speaking of Brook Lynn, here’s another do as I say, not as I doer. She made up a non-existent babe to pull the wool over Valentin Cassadine’s (James Patrick Stuart) eyes, and yet it’s Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth) who’s the real bad guy.

And if Brook Lynn is so worried that Austin may know more than he’s letting on re: baby Louise/Bailey, why would she continue to antagonize him? Don’t her shenanigans give him cause to bust her? A real Quartermaine would keep friends close, and (potential) enemies closer.

* With all this talk of Jeff Webber (Richard Dean Anderson), it’s going to be a little more than a little disappointing when he fails to make an appearance, and the plotline goes the way of the screaming woman in the Crete compound.

* Smartest (Wo)man in the Room: Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr). Of course, the mystery man asking after Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner) and the patient who bonded with, then ghosted TJ Ashford (Tajh Bellow) are one and the same.
