When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.
Let’s see, what has General Hospital offered us that we should be thankful for? This critic is especially thankful for the exquisite, and, at hard times to watch, performances given by Johnny Wactor (Brando) and Sofia Mattsson (Sasha). These two have had very little to do as of late – and no, being a cutesy, expectant couple doesn’t cut it – but they stepped up to the plate and delivered in scenes depicting the aftermath of Baby Boy Brando’s harrowing birth.
Also, how nice is it that a show titled General Hospital actually has some action taking place inside a hospital and a story that is actually medically oriented? A double thank-you for that.
We’re also extending thanks to the soap for the long-in-coming arrest of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) – not because we think that it’s going to stymie the big bad (and please do not do that, we are using that term very loosely) anytime soon, but because we’re certain that it is at least putting the character in a position to finally, finally meet his maker, hopefully at the hands of poor, put-upon Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms), and hopefully no later than February Sweeps.
And now that we’ve given sincere – or sincere enough – thanks, it’s also time to bestow General Hospital a Golden Turkey Award for their handling of Jason Morgan’s (Steve Burton) exit.
This is, what, the third, fourth, tenth time that this character has been presumed dead? Notice of said presumed death was delivered by Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), who’s been presumed dead, to a room full of people who have all been presumed dead at one point or another – and the majority of them just took for granted that this is the death that stuck? Really?
Couldn’t General Hospital have at least gone the extra mile and revealed to the assemblage that no body was found in the rubble period? At least then it would make some semblance of sense when Jason inevitably returns to the canvas in a few months (or years) time.
* Best Keeping With Character Moment: Despite standing in a hospital corridor awaiting news about Baby Boy Brando, Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) still thinks it’s appropriate to force Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) into a conversation about Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros).
* Best Return…Eventually: It took some time and effort, but Drew Cain’s (Cameron Mathison) road home promises to really up the dramatic ante on General Hospital.
* Exchange of the Week:
Britt: Does anyone have a syringe?
Peter: Oh, what’d you have in mind?
Britt: Bleach! Drain cleaner?!
Peter: It was such a pity you took that oath, isn’t it, Britt?
Liesl: Yes, Britta. If only you didn’t have that pesky medical license. Oh, wait! I no longer have one of those. Drain cleaner it is!
* Given the utter hell that she put him through, did Olivia Falconeri Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero) really think that Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth) would accept either too little, too late apology or her invitation to break bread with the Q’s – AKA the family who’s treated him like gum at the bottom of their shoes since day one?
* Kudos to General Hospital for keeping the memory of One Life to Live alive via reference to the film Christina Comes Home For Christmas – a favorite of many a Llanviewite.
