This week, Sonny was voted on to the General Hospital board. Tracy was against it. But Laura and Elizabeth were for it, so they browbeat her into it. However, there are three very good reasons why that shouldn’t have happened.
Key Takeaways
- Sonny is a criminal
- Sonny’s money is tainted
- Sonny’s presence puts the entire hospital at risk
Sonny’s Reputation Puts General Hospital’s Credibility on the Line
Sonny (Maurice Benard) is a terrible, horrible, criminal human being. Tracy (Jane Elliot) tried to point out as much, reminding that Sonny killed her nephew, AJ (Sean Kanan), in cold blood. Eh, shrugged Laura (Genie Francis), the woman who repeatedly risked her life to bring down organized crime in Port Charles and is now its. mayor. These things happen, you know?
Eh, shrugged Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), the woman who was actually fond of EJ and whose grandparents were pillars of the GH community and were most certainly against crime bosses. Bygones! Also, he brings sandwiches to the staff, which absolutely makes up for all the killing and extorting and blackmailing and human trafficking. So Sonny is morally awful. But here is how his line of work could destroy GH.
Sonny’s Money Could Become the Hospital’s Biggest Liability
Sonny’s money comes from crime. Sonny donates money to the hospital. If Sonny is ever investigated — which he should be on a daily basis — Sonny’s funds would be frozen. Which means the hospital wouldn’t receive it. Which means their budgets, including staff salaries, equipment, subsidized care, and maintenance costs, would be blown to hell.
They’d have to fire people, cancel procedures, turn the needy away. It would be mayhem!
Sonny’s Influence Creates an Impossible Position for Doctors
Now that Sonny is on the GH board, he can start bringing… um… business associates in for treatment. Doctors are required to report suspicious injuries like bullet wounds and other suspicious conditions to the authorities.
But what if Board Member Sonny leans on them? Hard. They’ll start letting more and more crimes go. And if Sonny is ever investigated, which he should be on a daily basis, they stand to risk losing their licenses to practice medicine. While Sonny, once again, gets away scot-free.
