There’s a surprise twist on When Calls the Heart. Little Jack might meet his fate. Elizabeth finds out that her son could have diabetes. He needs to receive emergency insulin treatment. But is this storyline historically accurate?

Could Little Jack Die?

Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) already mourned the loss of Mountie Jack (Daniel Lissing). Now, she might have to mourn the loss of his son. She found out that Little Jack (Hyland Goodrich) could have diabetes, which was unheard of at the time. On Episode 10, “Through the Valley,” Elizabeth gets concerned about her son. She tells Nathan (Kevin McGarry) that he could be sick.

ELittle Jack goes unconscious after playing baseball. Nathan takes him to Dr. Faith Carter (Andrea Brooks), who runs a series of tests. She concludes that Little Jack has diabetes. “I’m sorry to tell you that Little Jack has diabetes,” Dr. Carter says. “There’s no cure for diabetes.”

Hearties React

WCTH Season 12 is set in 1922. Insulin was discovered in 1921 by Charles Best, Frederick Banting, and John Macleod, according to Diabetes UK. Dr. Carter tells Elizabeth that Little Jack needs insulin treatment, or he could die. It wasn’t until early 1922 that insulin was available for treating patients with diabetes. However, it would several months for this treatment to be made available to the general public.

Hearties have wondered what could happen to Little Jack. The last thing that Elizabeth needs is another loss. But some fans aren’t buying this storyline because the timing seems historically inaccurate. It’s unsure if Little Jack would receive this treatment in 1922 since it was made available to adult patients at the time. On the other hand, it was tested on a 14-year-old boy, which doesn’t make it impossible for Little Jack to receive treatment.

Hearties took to the WCTH Reddit to react. “Diabetes was a big deal with children back then and I’m not sure the year but I don’t think there was insulin at the time,” one Redditor commented. “65% of WCTH is not historically accurate and fans are drawing the line at diabetes?? Be for real,” another user argued, while another agreed, “It is close to true life as it gets.” As you can see, the reactions have been mixed. “Faith is going to come up with the cure of insulin 😁,” one fan confidently wrote, while another added, “This show has become a joke. 😭”
