Spanish playwright Lope de Vega advised “tricking expectancy” when it came to telling stories — that’s something writer David E. Kelley kept in mind when devising the finale of Season 2 for the HBO series Big Little Lies as the show concluded its summer run last night.

Here are some unexpected twists (and, perhaps, a few expected turns) Big Little Lies took for the Monterey Five! See if your list of OMG moments aligns with our list right here.

Let’s Go To The Videotape
It seemed like Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) was never going to admit that her late son Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) was abusive, but when Celeste (Nicole Kidman) provided video of him smacking her around, she had no choice. We thought this would prompt Mary Louise to give up her petition, but no, she still believes that Celeste needs help.

Mathematically Improbable
It was adorable when Ziggy (Iain Armitage) urged his mom Jane (Shailene Woodley) to keep dating Corey (Douglas Smith). We thought he’d pull out some great scientific reason, but then we realized “Oh, wait. Ziggy’s not Young Sheldon.” Instead, Ziggy just used his heart. “Your whole face and stuff is different,” Ziggy told his mom.

Second Chances
Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) and Ed (Adam Scott) seemed headed for divorce given that he’s realized he’s married to a big narcissist. Instead, the couple renewed their vows and decided to give their marriage another chance.

Renata’s Revenge
It was improbable that the buyer of Gordon’s (Jeffrey Nordling) train set wouldn’t want to take custody of his new toys, but watching Renata (Laura Dern) take a baseball bat to her husband’s beloved possessions was so cathartic!

Soul Survivor
Elizabeth (Crystal Fox) coming out of her coma, albeit briefly, took us by surprise, as did her subsequent relapse. She wasn’t that psychic. Bonnie didn’t end up walking into the water. In fact, she, accompanied by her four pals, journeyed into the light of truth – the police station, that is, in order to come clean about her role in Perry’s death.

Will there be a Season 3 of Big Little Lies? There’s no word yet, but Soap Hub will keep fans of the show apprised if the lives of the Monterey Five are going to continue onscreen.
