Daytime soaps aren’t the only shows getting back into production, implementing COVID-19 safety measures. This Is Us, the NBC nighttime soap, is coming back a little earlier than originally planned — which is great news for the show’s millions of fans.
Deadline reports that new episodes of This Is Us will start airing on NBC two weeks earlier than originally planned. The Pearsons and their extended family and friends will now be back in a two-hour premiere on Tuesday, October 27 — the week before the Presidential election. Previously, a fall premiere of Tuesday, November 10 had been released.
Production on Season 5 of the nighttime family drama (heck, let’s call it what it is — a GREAT soap opera!) is set to commence today, Thursday, September 24.
Last season ended with the Pearson clan being aware that matriarch Rebecca (Mandy Moore) would need parental caretaking. One flash-forward showed her at what could be the end of her life.
Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) had a blowout to end all blowouts that will make future family gatherings rather tense. This Is Us also stars Milo Ventimiglia (Jack), Chrissy Metz (Kate), Chris Sullivan (Toby), and Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth).
Other cast members include: Emmy winner Ron Cephas Jones as William “Shakespeare” Hill, Randall’s biological dad, who appears in flashbacks, Jon Huertas as Miguel Rivas, Jack’s best friend and Rebecca’s second husband, Alexandra Breckenridge as Sophie, Kevin’s ex-wife and Kate’s childhood pal.
Additional cast includes Griffin Dunne as Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Pearson, who is Jack’s brother and uncle to Kevin, Kate, and Randall. Michael Angarano (Will & Grace) plays him as a young adult. Viewers also learned in the finale that Kevin is set to become a father of twins. Caitlin Thompson’s Madison Simons, a friend of Kate’s, is the mother of those babies.
This Is Us went through a development process to become the show you see today. Creator Dan Fogelman wrote an 80-page script that had the lives of eight adults who were octuplets. The eight children were pared down to three.
Working titles for the program were 36 (the age of the triplets when the show started), Happy Birthday, and The Story of Us. Executive producers for This Is Us are Fogelman, Isaac Aptaker, Elizabeth Berger, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, Ken Olin (thirtysomething; Falcon Crest), Charlie Gogolak, and Jess Rosenthal.
