“There was this part where Beth says [to her mom], ‘You know, I’m strong because of you,'” says Kelechi Watson.
“There was this ancestral, spiritual exchange in that moment. I think Beth is here because of people like [Phylicia] have walked through the door and made a path…
“It’s [now] not a strange thing to see a black woman roll through with box braids and a suit on, talking, about [how she is] going to work and holding down [her] husband and [her] family and kids.”

Among the many great moments (both big and ‘small’) in this episode is the moment in which Beth and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) first meet.
Having addressed a big part of her past, Beth will find a new purpose by the episode’s conclusion.
“We’re on the verge of Randall launching into this new political career where he’s going to be a councilman,” says Elizabeth Berger, the show’s executive producer.
“We’re [also] on the verge of [Beth] having figured out what she wants to do. Her schedule is going to be changing. [They’ve] got three girls in the house.
“As exciting as this is for them, real-life is going to continue, and there are still going to be challenges that come up along the way,” teased Berger.
This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
