Tonight’s This Is Us episode gives Susan Kelechi Watson a showcase to shine in an episode that’s all about her character Beth! Viewers will meet her parents Carol and Abe.
Her parents are played by TV vets Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show) and Carl Lumbly (Supergirl) and the audience will finally learn all about Beth’s passion for ballet dancing.
“One of the things that I hear the most after ‘How did Jack [Milo Ventimiglia] die’ was, ‘When are we going to get a backstory about Beth?'” says creator and executive producer Dan Fogelman.
“We’ve been wanting to do this. This an episode of television made by a group of women who I’m incredibly proud of.”
This episode, entitled Our Little Island Girl, has Beth traveling home to Washington D.C. to check in on her mom.
While the tale is heavy with drama, Kelechi Watson says what she loves most about Beth is her humor.
“I get these lines that are just hysterical,” the actress says. “I always think of Beth as an ‘every woman.’ Representation is so important. I’m so excited that I get to play a black woman who is normal and striving to do her best in life.”
