The Walking Dead’s Definitive Top Five Romances

While The Walking Dead is known more for its doom and gloom, the show has given us plenty of romance throughout its 10 seasons, including love triangles, will-they-or-won’t-they couples, and surprise hookups.

For those viewers interested in the more fairytale aspects of life in the apocalypse, we present our top five picks for best romances in the show’s history.

5. Sasha and Bob

While there are some who might be more invested in the love story of Sasha and Abraham, it’s really the pairing of Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) that was sweeter and made the audience care more about both characters.

The two bonded while on the road to Terminus and had plenty of cute interactions such as playing “the good out of the bad” game, joking about what they like and don’t like.

When Bob meets his maker just after finding his way back to Sasha after getting his leg cut off, it’s she who tearfully holds his hand as he succumbs to his bite.

4. Rick and Daryl

Okay, technically this is a “bromance” but have two characters cared more for each other than Sherriff Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Mr. Dixon (Norman Reedus)?  What started as a relationship filled with animosity—after all, Daryl did throw some dead squirrels at him when they first met—turned into a deep affection you rarely see between two men on TV.

Who could forget when Rick told Daryl, “You being back with us here, now, that’s everything. You’re my brother,” when the two reconnected on the road after Terminus. They even argued like a married couple.

In one episode, the two had a Butch and Sundance moment when they went on a supply run and bickered like an old married couple. But even when they disagreed about things, they were always there for one another. And when Rick “died” last season, Daryl spent months alone in the woods, searching for his body and not really believing he was gone. That’s love.

3. Carol and Ezekiel

From the moment Carol (Melissa McBride) pulled Ezekiel (Khary Payton) in for a kiss after he nearly died in the museum, this became a feel-good love story.

The King was smitten with Carol from their first meeting, but Mrs. Peletier never took his flirting seriously and rebuffed his early attempts at romance. But eventually, she couldn’t resist his charm and the two fell in love.

By Season 9, Ezekiel proposed and after a five-year time jump, the two were shown married and happily ruling over the Kingdom with their adopted son Henry. But when Alpha beheaded her son, Carol pulled away from her husband, returning his ring and announcing, “I’ll never regret the fairytale.”

The two did share a “quickie” reunion at the end of this season before the King went on his way to help Eugene find his radio love, so perhaps a reunion is in the cards.

2. Aaron and Eric

Sure, there are some fans out there who were devastated when Jesus (Tom Payne) died without having ever seen his hinted-at coupling with Aaron (Ross Marquand), but the coupling of Aaron and Eric (Jordan Woods-Robinson) was one of the longest and most pure of all Dead pairings.

This was a relationship that began pre-Walkers, which is rare in this universe. The two set up a home in Alexandria and helped recruit others to the community—including Rick and company. The two fought together, set up a happy home, and proved that some sense of relationship normalcy could exist in the apocalypse.

1. Maggie and Glenn

This is the one romance that most every Walking Dead fan can agree was the best. What started as a meet-cute between Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Glenn (Steven Yeun) on the Greene family farm grew into a loving, devoted relationship that resulted in the birth of baby boy Herschel.

Although their initial hookup during a supply run may have seemed like a one-night stand at the time, it was obvious from the get-go that both were attracted to one another and the feelings came quickly. Glenn even asks her dad for permission to marry Maggie—how sweet is that?

Of course, we all know this love story has a tragic ending thanks to Negan and his bat Lucille, but the love story of Glenn and Maggie is one that will always fill the hearts of viewers.
