In news sure to send fans into a zombie-like state, AMC has announced that the 11th season of The Walking Dead, which will premiere sometime in 2021, will be its last.

But there’s plenty of good news as well for fans of cable’s all-time highest-rated show. For one, the show still has its already-filmed finale from Season 10 set to air on Oct. 4, and six bonus episodes will follow sometime in early 2021.

And according to The Walking Dead Official Instagram account (see the post below), Season 11 will consist of a record 24 episodes, which will conclude sometime in 2022. That means there are 31 episodes until we say farewell to whoever survives the apocalypse.

Now comes the great news. A new spinoff is in the works that will feature two of the show’s most iconic characters.

“In 2023, Angela Kang will return to helm a fourth #TWD series starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride,” the Instagram site noted.

Daryl and Carol have been with the show since the beginning, and the besties are Walking Dead fans faves. Anytime the two of them are in a scene together, you can feel the chemistry, and even though they are not romantic, people have long pushed for a Daryl/Carol coupling.

According to TV Line, this isn’t the only new spinoff to expect once the mothership series comes to an end. Plans are in motion for an anthology-themed offshoot that may feature stand-alone stories, small arcs, and could even revisit past and future stories of some of the most beloved (or hated) characters.

Between the forthcoming The Walking Dead: World Beyond TV series (set to begin in October), Fear the Walking Dead, the Rick-centric feature films in the pipeline, and all of these new shows, AMC should keep fans plenty occupied with new content in the ensuing years.

“What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world,” said writer and former showrunner Scott Gimple in a statement. “We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead—brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives.”
