Greta Thunberg of Sweden gained international acclaim after speaking out on the importance of climate change and how the world may be affected adversely because of it. Now, the passionate youngster has received an honor for her activism.
Every year in December, people wait to see who will be named Man or Person of the year by Time magazine. This year, with plenty of adult candidates to choose from, the magazine has named Thunberg its Person of the Year, placing her on the cover of its current issue.
“We can’t just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow,” she told Time. “That is all we are saying.”
Thunberg came into the public eye after camping out in front of the Swedish Parliament in August 2018 when she was just 15 years old. She held a sign that read “Skolstrejk för klimatet” (translation: “School Strike for Climate”).
Since then, she’s spoken to heads of state at the United Nations about climate change. She has also inspired other activists like Jane Fonda to protest and get arrested to bring attention to the cause.
The Time honor isn’t her first. Previously, Time had honored Thunberg with naming her one of the 100 most influential people of 2019. Thunberg was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize which ended up being given to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.
Thunberg will continue to speak out on climate change. And she means business. “I want you to panic,” Thunberg said at the annual convention of CEOs and world leaders in Davos Switzerland at the beginning of the year. “I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.”
