Punky Brewster, the loveable NBC sitcom from the 1980s that starred Soleil Moon Frye and the late George Gaynes is coming back! Punky Brewster will premiere on Peacock (NBC’s streaming service) next month!
The revival is set for 10 episodes and all of them will become available at once when the series drops on Thursday, February 25 on Peacock.
The show continues telling the story of Punky, now a single mother of three, who is trying to get her life back on track. Watch for Punky to encounter Izzy, a young girl in the foster care system who reminds Punky of herself at her age.
In addition to Frye reprising her role as Punky, original series cast member Cherie Johnson (Family Matters) is coming back as Cherie.
The series also stars Freddie Prinze Jr. (I Know What You Did Last Summer; Scooby Doo) as Travis, Punky’s ex-husband, Quinn Copeland as Izzy, Noah Cottrell as Diego, Olivier De Los Santos as Daniel, and Lauren Lindsey Donzis as Hannah.
Along with the new series, the original Punky Brewster can also be seen on Peacock. The new Punky Brewster is written and executive produced by Steve and Jim Armogida (School of Rock; Grounded for Life). Frye serves as executive producer as does original series creator David Duclon (Family Matters; Silver Spoons) and Emmy-winning producer Jimmy Fox (The Arrangement; United Shades of America).
Gaynes was known to soap fans for his 1979-80 turn as General Hospital mobster Frank Smith, the villain in Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura’s (Genie Francis) first “love on the run” storyline. On Punky Brewster, he portrayed Henry Warnimont, Punky’s loveable foster parent. He passed away in 2016.
Diehard fans of the series recall that Punky’s birth name is Penelope. This isn’t the first additional series based on the original. It’s Punky Brewster, an animated program, featuring voices by the original cast, aired on NBC from September 14, 1985, to December 6, 1986.
