Shannen Doherty Reveals Her Cancer Has Returned In Stage 4

After her triumphant return in the Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot over the summer, actress Shannen Doherty has revealed a new challenge she’s dealing with — Stage 4 cancer. She opened up recently about it.

The fan-favorite star spoke out on Good Morning, America about why she has decided to reveal the diagnosis she received a year ago after all this time, especially since it’s such a private matter.

“I’d rather people hear it from me. I don’t want it to be twisted, a court document. I want it to be real and authentic. I want to control the narrative. I want people to know from me.”

The court documents she’s referring to have to do with the fire damage she experienced during the California fires and her assertion that State Farm, her insurance carrier, owes her far more than they have paid so far. Ahead of the court proceedings, papers will be made public that include her health status and she didn’t want anyone to find out that way.

Honoring Luke Perry

The shocking death of Luke Perry was a wakeup call for the actress as she realized someone who seemed perfectly healthy could still go in the blink of an eye. “Why wasn’t it me? It was so weird for me to be diagnosed and then somebody who was seemingly healthy to go first,” she shared.

She wanted to honor her late friend by returning to the show that made them huge stars. But keeping the secret was hard — and she opened up to co-star Brian Austin Green. He let her know that he had her back while they were on set.

It was important to Doherty to show people that her diagnosis doesn’t mean she (and others in her position) can’t continue to work and give something back to the world.
