Sam Lloyd, who memorably played lovable loser Ted the lawyer on Scrubs, passed away on April 30. He was 56 at the time of his death.

Sam Lloyd Loses His Battle

According to NBC News, he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. His cancer eventually spread elsewhere, ending up in his lungs, jaw, liver, and spine. Lloyd was born November 12, 1963, in Weston, Vermont, and he graduated college from Syracuse University.

Known on the show for his great facial expressions, pratfalls, and singing—Ted was a member of the a cappella group The Worthless Peons comprised of all hospital staff that often sang theme songs from cartoons—Lloyd was part of Scrubs’ ensemble for the show’s entire nine-year run.

Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, wrote on his Twitter page, “Thinking a lot about Sam Lloyd today. (Ted). Truly such a kind, sweet guy. He will be missed by so many.”

A second post from Lawrence later in the evening noted he was watching clips of Lloyd’s incredible work on Scrubs.

“The songs! The greatest sweaty pratfall of all time!” he wrote. “Those who reached out, our ‘Scrubs family’ appreciates it – he had the biggest heart of all of us. But now send all those good thoughts to his family. And to your own loved ones.”

Zach Braff, who starred as JD on the show, posted his own tribute to Lloyd on Twitter, calling him one of the “funniest actors I’ve ever had the joy of working with.

“Sam Lloyd made me crack up and break character every single time we did a scene together,” he wrote. “He could not have been a kinder man. I will forever cherish the time I had with you, Sammy.”

Later, he posted a video of Lloyd with his acapella group The Blanks singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Sarah Chalke, Scrubs’ Elliott also took to Twitter to send her condolences. “Oh Sam…I feel so lucky I got the chance to know and work with you,” she wrote alongside a photo of her former co-star. “You were the kindest, funniest man. Sending so much love to your family. Rest In Peace.”

Donald Faison, who played Dr. Christopher Turk on the show, also posted a tribute on his Instagram account saying, “Rest In Peace Sam. God bless your family. I’ll always treasure our time together singing, playing basketball, laughing, working and partying. You’re a true gem.”

Lloyd, who also had memorable appearances on Seinfeld, The West Wing, and Desperate Housewives, is survived by his wife Vanessa and 1-year-old son, Weston.
