Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Famer and Cars lead singer Ric Ocasek died in New York City on Sunday, according to several local New York news sources.
WNBC and The New York Post have both received confirmation from NYPD spokespeople and police reports that police found an unconscious Ocasek at his townhouse at around 4 pm and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
No official cause of death had yet been announced by the NYPD by around 8 pm Sunday when published reports of the singer’s passing began surfacing. However, some reports say he died from natural causes.
He was found by his estranged wife, model Paulina Paurizkova. The two filed for divorce in 2018 after 28 years of marriage, but the divorce had not yet been finalized. The townhouse in which Ocasek passed was put on the market earlier this year.
Ocasek, born Richard Theodore Otcasek in 1949 in Baltimore Maryland, was inducted into The Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame just last year after a career that spanned more than four decades.
He had 13 Top 40 hits with The Cars between 1978 and 1987. The hits included songs such as Good Times Roll, Shake It Up, and My Best Friend’s Girl. He is survived by five children.
