Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer – onscreen, they’re monster-slaying teenagers whose greatest battle helped them find their way to one other. Off-screen, they’re a pair of fashion plates who slay each and every red carpet they strut across.
According to Matt Duffer, co-creator of Stranger Things, it all started with a screen test. “That first audition, we did a chemistry read with [Heaton and] Natalia, and sparks were flying.”
Moving forward, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment that the pair’s on-screen romance bled into their off-screen day-to-day life – both are notoriously private people, especially in concern for their budding love affair.
What’s certain is that rumors of a romance first started swirling after Heaton and Dyer vacationed together in Spain in September 2016. Their social media accounts began to clog with snaps taken of the other, they were each other’s date to the 2017 SAG awards, and travel buddies who indulged in two further trips abroad.
Playing It Coy
On January 30, 2017, an unnamed source told Life & Style magazine that Heaton and Dyer were most certainly a couple. “They’re definitely dating. They’ve been together since before Season 2 began filming in October. [They spend] every waking minute together, on set and off.” The supposed insider also claimed that Heaton had accompanied Dyer to her Tennessee hometown and met her parents.
Two months later, when Heaton and Dyer were spotted together at LAX, a TMZ cameraman inquired about their status. Dyer demurred, “Whether people are dating or hanging out, I think that our cast just is cool with each other. I mean, I won’t speak for anybody else but it’s been you know. We’re all one big family.”
Making It Official
October 4, 2017: Dyer and Heaton are spotted holding hands. That in and of itself isn’t enough to definitively prove a relationship. But subsequent jaunts to Paris and London added further fuel to the fire and by the time the two were spotted kissing on a UK street, the truth became undeniable. On December 4 of that year, the duo made their romance official by taking to a red carpet, hand in hand.
On The Benefits of Working With The One You Love
He says, “Because we work in the same industry and have had similar trajectories, we’ve gone through it together. Sharing that does bring you closer…. You go into high-pressure situations together but you can share those insecurities or whatever they are…”
She says. “It’s an interesting thing to work with somebody who you go home with. It’s always really fun. We’re really comfortable with each other, so we can play and feel more free, and we can talk about it before.”
But why the need for secrecy? For Dyer, privacy is, “something important to me – with my family, with my friends, I really like to keep it for me.” For his part, Heaton concedes that “The caginess…might have been unnecessary,” but he also admits that in the early days he and Dyer, “didn’t really know what the relationship was.”
