Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes — or “TomKat,” as they were known to the public — certainly had one of the more interesting courtships in Hollywood. While their romance felt like a whirlwind, they did stay together for almost six years.

Despite their bitter breakup, it’ll be hard to ever forget about this relationship, especially thanks to Cruise’s public displays of love. From how the couple first met to their split, find out more about this once great celebrity romance.

How Did Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Meet?

Holmes had a crush on the Top Gun star as a teen, but she didn’t meet Cruise until she was in talks to be in Mission: Impossible 3 in April 2005. They then made their romance public a few weeks later in Rome, Italy, where Cruise was accepting a lifetime achievement award.

Oprah Declaration
Tom Cruise then made an infamous appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show on May 23, 2005, in which he jumped on her couch and declared his love for Holmes. Not to mention, he also pulled Holmes out from backstage.

The Engagement
He popped the question at the Eiffel Tower in Paris seven weeks after meeting in June 2005 (a few days after Holmes said she was converting to Scientology). Her ring was an Edwardian-style oval-shaped five-carat diamond.

Baby Makes Three
Less than six months after they went public with their engagement, Holmes and Cruise announced they were welcoming their first child together. Daughter Suri arrived on April 18, 2006, in Santa Monica, California.

Italian Nuptials

After welcoming Suri, Cruise and Holmes tied the knot in a lavish Italian wedding at the Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy on November 18, 2006. A-list guests in attendance included Jada and Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Victoria and David Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, and Marc Anthony. Holmes wore a Giorgio Armani gown, while Cruise wore an Armani tuxedo. The best man was Scientology leader, David Miscavige.

Parting Ways
Less than six years after saying “I do,” Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise on June 29, 2012. This was her first divorce and his third. Cruise said he was focused on their daughter, but their breakup was splashed all over the tabloids.
