Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder have had complicated relationships with fame and Hollywood as individuals over the course of their career, but long before that, they were one of Hollywood’s most fascinating couples.
Though they were very young during their time together, they clearly loved each other. From how the couple first met to their eventual split, find out more about this once-great celebrity romance.
How Did Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder Meet?
Depp and Ryder officially met at the New York premiere of the film, Great Balls of Fire (which Ryder starred in), in June 1989. Depp was 26 at the time, while Ryder was only 17.
First Date
The two talented actors went on their first date a few months later after a mutual friend connected them. They fell in love instantly and became inseparable.
Edward Scissorhands
While in their relationship, Depp and Ryder starred in the movie Edward Scissorhands. He played the titular role, while she played Kim Boggs. The movie was not only a box office success, but it cemented them as a major Hollywood couple.
Engaged
The two got engaged just five months after their first date in 1990, and Ryder was only 18 at the time. As a declaration of his love, Depp decided to get a tattoo on his arm that said: “Winona Forever.” The couple tried to get married with the help of director John Waters (who was an ordained minister). He didn’t think it was the best idea, as the couple was very young, and he was able to talk them out of tying the knot.
Parting Ways
Three years later, they announced their split. Depp had to get his tattoo fixed to say “Wino Forever,” and the breakup reportedly destroyed Ryder, as it was her first serious romance. However, despite their split, Ryder has been very open about how much she loved Depp and how they had a great relationship.
