Renée Elise Goldsberry, who starred on Hamilton on Broadway, earning both a Tony and a Grammy for her role in the hit musical has landed a new gig. She’s playing opposite Sara Bareilles in Girls5Eva, a sitcom for the Peacock, NBC’s streaming service.
Tina Fey (30 Rock), Robert Carlock (Friends; 30 Rock), and Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) are executive producing the new comedy which is about a former girl group.
Goldsberry is set to play Wickie, described by the Hollywood Reporter as a “glamorous, big-voiced star of the group back in the day. Her solo career has hit a ditch, but she’s determined to use a new opportunity to retake her rightful place as pop royalty.”
“This wickedly talented team is creating something brave and new,” Goldsberry said. “I’m grateful I get to be in the room with them. I honestly can’t think of a better way to transition out of this year and into the new one than laughing with strong and beautiful women.”
The story involves a modern-day rapper who samples the one hit the music group had back in the 1990s. The women in the group today are balancing mates, children, careers, money issues, older parents, and aches and pains, but the question is — can they also be Girls5eva?
In addition to Hamilton and One Life to Live, Goldsberry is known for CBS’ The Good Wife, Netflix’s Altered Carbon, and NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
A native of San Jose, California, Goldsberry was raised in both Houston, Texas and Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a degree in acting and attended the University of Southern California where she received her masters in vocal jazz performance.
In addition to Hamilton, her stage credits include the Broadway production of Disney’s The Lion King and a national tour of Dreamgirls. She also had a recurring role as a featured singer on Ally McBeal.
Goldsberry has sung with many well-known singers including Barry White, Patti Austin, Al Green, Rod Stewart, Yolanda Adams, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Brian McKnight, Jeffrey Osborne, Faith Hill, Barry Manilow, and Vonda Shepherd. In addition to Goldsberry (as Wickie) and Bareilles (who plays Dawn), Carson Daly plays Wayne, John Goodman appears as Tony, April Stewart plays Debbie, and Tony Hale plays Fred.
