Good Morning America shared the news that former host Tom Bergeron is returning to Dancing with the Stars. He will serve as a guest judge during the show’s 20th Birthday Party on Tuesday, November 11.

Key Takeaways

  • Tom Bergeron was the original host of DWTS.
  • He will return as a guest host for the show’s 20th anniversary episode.
  • Bergeron credited the man who made his return happen.

Returning to the Ballroom

In 2019, Bergeron left DWTS after a dispute with producers over casting Sean Spicer. He fought to make the show an escape for viewers by avoiding the inclusion of any political figures, according to Deadline.

Bergeron continued to make his arguments known. Unfortunately, that led to his firing from the show. In the meantime, Bergeron kept himself busy with projects such as The Masked Singer and Dancing with Sharks.

On GMA, it was confirmed that Bergeron would be returning as a guest judge. In an interview with TV Insider, he credited the original showrunner, Conrad Green, for making it happen.

“And I’m happy to say he’s back in that role currently, and boy, he has righted that ship. I mean, wow,” Bergeron said. “The numbers, I texted [executive producer] Deena Kantz and I said, ‘I’m particularly enjoying watching the show beat The Voice.'”

Bergeron met with Green in the past to discuss a potential return in some form. He suggested returning as a guest judge. Bergeron’s friend and professional dancer, Cheryl Burke, returned to the ballroom for the first time in three years.

Stirring Up Good Trouble

It’s going to be emotional to have Bergeron back on the set of the show. But he promised that there will be plenty of “comedic moments” since he’ll be sitting next to Bruno Tonioli.

When it comes to his judging style, Bergeron said that it will be “similar to my hosting style: somewhat loose and unpredictable.” As for what he can expect, he admits that it’ll be a “wonderfully emotional, nostalgic night.”

The 20th anniversary episode will be a special one, featuring surprise moments and unique dances. Bergeron is just elated to be back at the place where he feels the most at home.

“But I’m just looking forward to being in an environment surrounded by people I really care about on live television, where there’s no second take. It’s my happy place,” he added.
