The Price is Right returned for its new season on Monday, September 22. A new game called “The Lion’s Share” debuted, but viewers claim the #1 daytime show has jumped the shark.

New Season, Big Changes

The Price is Right is currently in its 54th season, so the game show has to find innovative ways to shake things up. Monday’s episode debuted “The Lion’s Share,” a game in partnership with BetMGM, a gambling app.

During this segment, contestant Marian joined host Drew Carey to play the game. She had to enter the chamber and guess all five items correctly. The products included common household items, such as a whisk and a toaster.

Then, Marian had to choose five balls from the chamber on the digital screen. As reported by The U.S. Sun, she won a $14,419 trip to Tokyo, a hot tub worth $11,421, two guitars worth $5,250, and $2,000 in cash, totaling $33,090.

Not bad for a day’s work. However, viewers weren’t impressed. They claimed that the game was simultaneously “complicated” and “easily rigged.”

This game wasn’t the only big change for the show. John Quinn is the new executive producer and showrunner for Season 54, which could explain why they introduced this new game.

Jumped The Shark?

On Reddit, fans feared the game show was running out of ideas. They claimed the segment marked the “death of the show.” One fan wrote, “Sponsored games like the death of the show. The game was too complex.”

Someone else responded, “That’s what I was about to say. It has truly jumped the shark.” Other fans couldn’t understand the concept of the game. They hoped it would be around temporarily, as it’s part of a sponsorship with the MGM Grand.

One Redditor asked, “Why is it a lion (other than it’s MGM, obviously)? Why does a lion have a wind tunnel of balls?”

Someone else wrote, “Horrendous game all around. Too long, too easy, too luck-based, and on top of that, sponsored by a gambling app. Hopefully that was the last time.” (Find out how The Price is Right pulled out all the stops for its 10,000th episode.)
