Fans of The Chicken Sisters are in for a treat. Hallmark has renewed the series for Season 2. There’s also some surprise casting news. JAG alum David James Elliott is joining the cast.

Happy Chicken Coup

On Monday, April 7, Deadline broke the news that the Hallmark Channel renewed The Chicken Sisters for a second season. The drama is an adaptation of KJ Dell’Antonia’s novel of the same name. This report also has some other news.

Filming started in Vancouver. The show’s original cast members will return, including Genevieve Angelson, Lea Thompson, Schuyler Fisk, and Wendie Malick. The show is adding a hunky actor to the cast. Elliott will join Season 2 as a recurring character. At this time, there are few details about his character. Elliott will play a man from Gus’ (Malick) past who returns to town.

Big Changes Coming To Season 2

That’s not the only change that’s happening. Writer Erin Gibson received an attractive promotion. She will serve as the showrunner and executive producer. This isn’t the only Hallmark drama that’s facing a shakeup. (Big changes are also coming in When Calls the Heart, Season 13.)

Gibson will replace Annie Mebane, who served as the showrunner for Season 1. Samantha DiPippo, Senior Vice President of Programming at Hallmark Media, released a statement about the change. She also assured fans that Season 2 will have the same energy. “The show is in great hands with Erin Gibson taking the reigns as showrunner this season, and we know that our stellar cast led by Schuyler Fisk, Genevieve Angelson, Lea Thompson, and Wendie Malick will serve up something special for viewers.”

Season 1 debuted on Hallmark+, where it’s available to binge. On March 30, the series premiered on the Hallmark Channel, where it’ll air through May 18. The show has been a success on the network. It’s been rumored that Season 2 could also air on the Hallmark Channel in the same timeslot as WCTH, which gets big ratings. (See how WCTH Season 2 broke records.)
