Mel Owens is the new Golden Bachelor. He’s not pulling any punches. The former NFL star revealed his no-go list, which won’t sit well with Bachelor Nation fans. Find out his dating rules for his season.
No-Go-List
Casting will be different in the second season. That’s because Owens has dating requirements. The 66-year-old prefers a younger woman. “They ask me, ‘What’s your preference?’ So, I just said [ages] 45 to 60, just being honest,” Owens said on the Wednesday, June 4 episode of the MGoBlue podcast with Jon Jansen, as reported by Us Weekly.

Owens had lunch with the executive producer. He admitted that if they cast women over the age of 60, he would eliminate them from the show. Producers were shell-shocked by his admission. “‘Mel, you can’t. This is not The Silver Bachelor. This is The Golden Bachelor,'” Owens recalled producers saying. “‘But they’re going to be hot. Don’t worry about it.'”
No Choice
ABC hasn’t spoken out about Owens’ strict dating requirements, and the cast for Season 2 hasn’t been revealed yet. Owens got to know the women in his journey to love. He said that they were “going to be beautiful.” However, that doesn’t mean he had a hand in picking them. Producers only asked Owens about the type of women he likes.

“Well, [the women] got to be fit, because I’m staying in shape and work out and stuff,” Owens said. “And I told them, ‘Try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, you know, that kind of stuff, right?'”
Aside from looks and aesthetics, Owens wants a woman who is a “lifetime learner” but also active. Later in the podcast, the retired athlete shared that a friend gave him the phone number of what turned out to be the casting department. Owens was named the next Golden Bachelor in April.
