Doctor Odyssey Trailer Breaks Records, Hints Intriguing, Soapy Plot Twist

Ryan Murphy’s new medical drama Doctor Odyssey is already breaking records, and it hasn’t even premiered. The trailer for the new series broke records after it went viral on social media. It also teased a possible theory about the show’s premise. 

Unprecedented Record

According to Deadline, the new trailer for Doctor Odyssey set a new record for fall premieres. Within the first 48 hours, the trailer attracted 77.8 million views and went viral on social media. The ABC series set a record for having the most views for a new broadcast, which hasn’t even aired yet. 

NBC’s drama This Is Us, which starred The Young and the Restless alum Justin Hartley (ex-Adam), held the previous record. This new ABC medical drama feels more like a primetime soap. Doctor Odyssey stars Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson. They suck viewers in with their good looks and charm. There’s plenty of love and drama on the high seas.

The trailer was posted on the show’s official TikTok account, which had 38.8 million views alone. Most of the other viewing took place on the official Facebook page. What makes this so unexpected is that the trailer was posted 10 days before the September 26th premiere. 

Fans were intrigued by the new drama, which features A-list guest stars, such as Shania Twain, Kelsea Ballerini, and Cheyenne Jackson. Doctor Odyssey is Murphy’s first show on ABC. However, the details of the show have been kept under wraps. It will air alongside 9-1-1 on Thursday nights.

Unexpected Twist

The trailer also teased a possible theory that has fans buzzing. The quote reads, “Our mission is to preserve the dream. And that’s why you’re here. Keep these dreamers safe.” 

Some viewers wonder if the new series is based on Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. The poem depicts Odysseus’s resistance to returning home a decade after the Trojan War. The guest stars could symbolize some of the mystical creatures that he encounters. The story of a man on a journey of self-discovery while at sea feels familiar to readers of Homer.

Joshua Jackson plays Max Bankman, The Odyssey’s new cruise doctor. He will work with Capt. Robert Massey and his medical team. Since lives could be at stake, the show could also have a murder mystery element to it. 

Doctor Odyssey premieres on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. New episodes stream the following day on Hulu.
