It is no secret that Days of our Lives star and General Hospital alum Thaao Penghlis is a history buff and a world traveler. When he is not entertaining an audience onscreen, Penghlis is exploring the wonders of the world. Now he invites fans along for the ride with his series of podcasts, The Lost Treasures, an exploration of Homer’s The Odyssey through the eyes of German archeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who brought the exotic locations to life.

Thaao Penghlis: Sharing His Passion

Penghlis, who plays Tony on DAYS, has been captivating audiences for more than 50 years as an actor with his larger-than-life presence and smooth-as-silk vocal tones. Now, he is reaching out to the adventure-loving set with his riveting depiction of the famous Greek poet’s literary masterpiece. It’s told in a detective-style podcast with sound effects setting the scene as he reveals Schliemann’s discoveries that changed what was once thought of as a myth into reality.

Long before he studied acting, Penghlis wanted to be an archeologist and unlock the secrets of his Greek ancestry. His early travels took him to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. It was a visit to the Tomb of Alexander the Great that inspired the actor to do a podcast to motivate others to walk in the footsteps of the ancients. A visit to Schliemann’s gravesite and an overwhelming sense of kinship with the explorer sealed the deal for him.

He began to research the archeologist’s journey through the Mediterranean, searching locations written about by Homer and finding artifacts that proved his tall tale had roots in real life, rocking the world of academics in the 19th Century. The first stop on Penghlis’s fact-finding mission was the Archaeological Museum in Athens, where he gained exclusive access to Schliemann’s documents and diaries.

The information he unearthed there fueled his dream to share the epic adventure with a larger audience. The immersive tale unfolds in a four-episode podcast series that includes the search for Ulysses, The Mycenaean Treasure, The Curse of Atreus, Schliemann’s obsession, and the final podcast that features the actor explaining what inspired him to share his own journey. Fans join Penghlis on his latest adventure by checking out The Lost Treasures podcasts available on Apple, Spotify, and Google.
