With the new season of NCIS rapidly approaching, we’ve decided to take the opportunity to dream up seven scenarios that we would love to see the venerable crime drama tackle.
We’re pulling for some stunning resurrections and most-welcome returns and we’re even suggesting that one member of the team should become a darling of the Hollywood system.
1. Gibbs Is Reunited With His Family
Gibbs has always been a grumpy, grumbling Gus. And most of that can be traced to the loss of his wife and daughter at the hands of a murderous drug dealer. But what if Shannon and Kelly were actually alive and well and living under Witness Protection? How would a reunion with the two people he loved most in the world alter Gibbs (Mark Harmon)?
2. Gibbs Finds Contentment With Dr. Ryan
We’re probably grasping at straws with our first wish. So, how about coming back down to earth and issuing a more easily obtainable request? Since it’s highly improbably that Gibbs would ever be reunited with wife number one – three other ladies would follow in Shannon’s stead – how about reigniting the spark that existed between Gibbs and the very much alive Samantha Ryan (Jamie Lee Curtis)?
Ryan, as you may recall, was a psychologist with the Department of Defense who assisted in profiling numerous suspects for Gibbs and Co. With the imminent exit of Forensic Pathologist Jacqueline Sloane in mind, wouldn’t it make sense to return Ryan to the team? If only she knew a ruggedly handsome, former Marine who could help her deal with that homicidal maniac she calls an ex-husband.
3. McGee Finds Fame and Fortune In Hollywood
Timothy Farragut McGee – Senior Field Agent, member of the NCIS Major Case Response Team, and…best selling author? As weird as it may sound, McGee (Sean Murray) is indeed a published novelist who toils under the pen name Thom E. Gemcity.
Gemcity’s stories follow one LJ Tibbs and his team of investigators – who all bear uncanny resemblances to a certain group of people who investigate crimes involving Navy personnel.
With Hollywood’s penchant for adapting book series with franchise potential, why not allow McGee to get the taste of the L.A. film scene? And just think about all the things that he and his ever-expanding family could get up to with all those lovely millions that would come their way.
4. Ziva and Tony, Together, ONSCREEN
As far as we, Gibbs, and the rest of the NCIS team are concerned, Ziva, Tony (Michael Weatherly), and their daughter, Tali, are safely ensconced in Paris, France. But that little factoid came courtesy of dialogue issued by Ziva (Cote de Pablo).
So, in keeping with the old adage, “seeing is believing,” we want to SEE the happy trio all together and living as one big happy family.
5. A Very Abby Christmas
All we want for Christmas is the return of the jolliest goth girl you ever did see. Abby (Pauley Perrette) used to love any excuse for a party or team get-together, and since it’s been quite some time since Miss Sciuto graced Washington D.C.’s Naval Yard, the Yuletide Season would be the perfect time for a fly-by visit.
6. The Team Expands By One
The roaster of NCIS agents is, to say the least fluid. Agents tend to come and go. Sometimes the going is on their terms. Other times…well, ask Catlin Todd (Sasha Alexander). So since a new addition to the team wouldn’t exactly be all that surprising, why not welcome back a character who fans already know and love?
If they need/want should ever arise, we’re pulling for the full time (re)introduction of Diane Neal’s Special Agent Abigail Borin – she of the Coast Guard Investigative Service. Borin already knows the lay of the land, so to speak, from her previous dealings with the NCISers so why not put her, her skills, and her history with the unit to good use?
7. More Appearances From Anthony DiNozzo Sr.
Ah, Anthony DiNozzo Sr. He’s a dapper gentleman who always brings with him a sense of merriment and just a hint of danger. His squabbles with his namesake were oftentimes the epitome of high-class comedy but they also belied a sense of melancholy.
And DiNozzo Sr. (Robert Wagner) is possessed of a rare gift. He can make the usually stone-faced Leroy Jethro Gibbs SMILE. Miracles, it seems, do exist!
Fans wondered whether or not we had seen the last of this oh-so-complicated figure once Tony decamped for the City of Lights, but he surprised us all by putting in four subsequent appearances sans son. Here’s hoping that Season 18 extends not only another invitation but an open-ended one at that.
