NCIS News: Season 18 Shocker As Show Gets Back To The Future

Last year, Days of our Lives jumped a year ahead in time. This fall, CBS procedural drama NCIS is going back in time, specifically to November 2019 when the show returns for its 18th season.

NCIS Goes Back To the Future

Last season ended with Gibbs (Mark Harmon) going to Hawaii for the ceremonial interring for the remains of Joe Smith, a Pearl Harbor survivor, played by Christopher Lloyd (Taxi; Back to the Future). However, TV Line reports that Gibbs won’t be coming back from paradise; instead, viewers will see the Gibbs who quizzically fell off the radar in Season 17’s eighth episode.

“We had an episode last year called ‘Musical Chairs,’ where Gibbs disappears from the squad room to go on a mission, and then he shows up at the end of the episode with a black eye,” co-showrunner Steve Binder noted. Viewers never got an answer as to what had transpired during his time away. Now, answers will be forthcoming.

“We are going to pick up Season 18 with that mission that Gibbs was on, back in time,” shared Binder. This sets the action in a pre-COVID world in the last two months of 2019.

As the season progresses, the show’s timeline will be in the COVID world. How will other NCIS shows handle COVID? Reportedly, NCIS: New Orleans will directly address the pandemic. NCIS: Los Angeles will address COVID but in a less specific way.

NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The series is a spinoff of the CBS drama JAG. NCIS premiered on September 23, 2004, on CBS.

In addition to Harmon returning as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, watch for the returns of cast members Sean Murray (Special Agent Timothy McGee), Emily Wickersham (Special Agent Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop), Wilmer Valderrama (Special Agent Nicholas “Nick” Torres), Maria Bello (Special Agent Jacqueline “Jack” Sloane), Brian Dietzen (Dr. Jimmy Palmer), Diona Reasonover (Forensic Scientist Kasie Hines), Rocky Carroll (NCIS Director Leon Vance), and David McCallum (Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard). An exact air date hasn’t been announced yet, but watch for NCIS to air in its regular time Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
