While it doesn’t seem like Christy (Anna Faris) will be returning home for the holidays on Mom — at least not onscreen – Bonnie (Alison Janney) does get a surprise visit this week when Kevin Pollak pops up as her former husband Alvin.
Only thing is Alvin was killed off the show way back in Season 2, after dying from a heart attack after a night in bed with Bonnie, going peacefully in his sleep. So how is the show pulling off this special appearance?
According to TV Line, Alvin will return from the grave in a dream sequence in which he offers Bonnie some advice when she is concerned about her new husband, Adam (William Fichtner), going skiing for the first time since an accident left him paralyzed. And Alvin isn’t at all surprised that his ex is a mess.
In the episode, Adam will try adaptive skiing in his wheelchair for the first time, despite Bonnie’s objections. After all, he became paralyzed in a snowboarding accident.
It’s no surprise that Bonnie and Adam get into it over his trip, as a great deal of the humor between the onscreen married couple comes from their fighting and things have only intensified since Christy left the nest this year to attend Georgetown Law in D.C.
Currently, in its eighth season, Mom has survived the departure of Faris by concentrating more on the supporting cast and dealing more with the marriage of Bonnie and Adam. The show has done five episodes so far this season, and the appearance of Pollak will mark Mom’s fall finale.
New episodes of Mom resume in early 2021. Pollak can currently be seen in Better Things, where he plays Sam’s brother Marion and on the Emmy-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, where he plays Moishe Maisel. Both shows return with new episodes in 2021.
