Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has revealed that she suffered a miscarriage in July of this year in a soul-bearing opinion piece for the New York Times.

Meghan Markle Reveals Miscarriage

The Duchess wrote that her devastating loss occurred on a morning that, “began as ordinarily as any other day.” While diapering her first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the son she shares with her husband Prince Harry, The Duchess, “felt a sharp cramp.”

She went on to explain that, “I dropped to the floor with [Archie] in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm. the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right.

“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second. Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand… Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal.”

In the throes of her agony, the Duchess reveals that she was transported back to a pivotal moment that had transpired one year previous. “Harry and I were finishing up a long tour in South Africa. I was exhausted… I was trying to keep a brave face in the very public eye.

“‘Are you OK?’ a journalist asked me. I answered him honestly.” And that honest answer included the Duchess admitting that her ascension into the ranks of the Windsor family, and becoming a figure rife for public scrutiny, had been a struggle.

And though the Duchess revealed that her “off-the-cuff reply” had “seemed to give people permission to speak their truth,” she opined that the question itself was what had truly inspired her.

“Sitting in a hospital bed, watching my husband’s heart break as he tried to hold the shattered pieces of mine, I realized that the only way to begin to heal is to first ask, ‘Are you OK?'”

The Duchess further explained that she was coming forward with her story because, “losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few… despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with [unwarranted] shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning.”

The Duchess’s writing follows in the stead of Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s public acknowledgment of the child they lost to miscarriage. In an Instagram post penned by Teigen, the model and television personality shared that, “everyday can’t be full of sunshine. On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”

That positive sentiment was echoed in Markle’s article, which also discussed the disconnect and dissonance that so many Americans have been feeling in the wake of political upheaval, racial tension, and the proliferation of the coronavirus.

“We are adjusting to a new normal where faces are concealed by masks, but it’s forcing us to look into one another’s eyes – sometimes filled with warmth, other times with tears.

“For the first time, in a long time, as human beings, we are really seeing one another. Are we OK? We will be.” Entertainment Hub sends condolences to both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their profound loss.
