Mandy Moore is speaking out against her ex-husband Ryan Adams and revealing that his past controlling behavior prevented her from pursuing a music career.
The This Is Us actress, along with a number of other women, recounted their experiences working with Ryan in a story for The New York Times.
In fact, seven different women revealed how Ryan impacted their careers and used sexual manipulation to get what he wanted out of them.
Mandy, who got married to Ryan in 2010 and officially divorced him in 2016, explained that Ryan’s behavior made her not want to pursue music anymore.
She and Ryan started working on music together in 2012, but he reportedly told her not to work with any other producers or managers besides him.
“Music was a point of control for him,” she revealed.
“He would always tell me, ‘You’re not a real musician, because you don’t play an instrument.'”
The 34-year-old also said he was “psychologically abusive,” and she has not released her own music in years.
“His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” she said.
“What you experience with him — the treatment, the destructive, manic sort of back and forth behavior — feels so exclusive. You feel like there’s no way other people have been treated like this.”
Following the release of the piece, Mandy took to her Instagram to show support for other women who have faced this sort of abuse.
“Speaking your truth can be painful and triggering but it’s always worth it,” she shared.
“My heart is with all women who have suffered any sort of trauma or abuse. You are seen and heard. #sisterhoodforever.”
