Lucy Liu has received a plethora of accolades and honors, including two Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Harvard Foundation’s arts medal, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And today she’s receiving yet another: the title of birthday girl.

Happy Birthday, Lucy Liu!

And that’s because she was born on December 2, 1968, in Jackson Heights, New York, which means that this fan-favorite is turning 52 years old today!

Liu was 19 when she was discovered by an agent while traveling on the subway. With their help, Liu landed a commercial and then she won the title role in the University of Michigan’s production of Alice in Wonderland all on her own.

In 1991, Liu made her professional acting debut in the FOX serial Beverly Hills, 90210. One year later, she made both her New York stage and film debut in Fairy Bones and Rhythm of Destiny respectively.

Subsequently, she guest-starred in an episode of L.A. Law (1993), Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995), The X-Files (1996), and High Incident (1996), and appeared in films like Bang (1995) and Jerry Maguire (1996).

In 1995, she had a three-episode arc on ER. Between 1996 and 1997, Liu had a main role in the Rhea Perlman vehicle Pearl. Shortly after that program’s cancellation, Liu began playing lascivious, egotistical trial lawyer Ling Woo in the surreal legal dramedy Ally McBeal. Liu remained with the series for the remainder of its run.

She then joined the cast of the blockbuster film Charlie’s Angels (2000), a continuation of the same-titled detective series. She returned for the equally successful sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, in 2003.

More roles followed, including guest roles in Sex and the City (2001), and Dirty Sexy Money (2008-2009), and parts in films like Chicago (2002) and Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003). Between 2012 and 2019, Liu portrayed Joan Watson in the procedural series Elementary, a successful updating of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes novel series. Her most recent starring role is in the Marc Cherry series Why Women Kill.

Liu has voiced several animated characters, including Mei in Disney’s Mulan II (2004), Silvermist in the Tinker Bell series (2008-2016), Futurama (2001-2002), and Master Viper in the Kung Fu Panda franchise (2008-2016).

Liu launched a directing career with the 2015 film Meena. Her other directorial credits include six episodes of Elementary, and episodes of Law & Order: SVU and Luke Cage.

Outside of her acting and directing, Liu is well known for her artistic endeavors. She is well versed in many media, and her work has been showcased in several gallery shows.

This talented woman is also known for her dedication to raising funds for breast cancer research and education, and her support of marriage equality and human rights. Liu is a proud single parent to a son, Rockwell, who was born in 2015 via a gestational surrogate.
