Lori Loughlin News: Star Sentenced In College Admissions Scandal

Her ingenue character – Jody Travis on the Edge of Night – didn’t get in much trouble with the law, but Jody’s portrayer, Lori Loughlin, is one of the more high-profile players in the college-admissions scandal known as Varsity Blues. Now the actress has learned her fate for her role in the scheme.

Loughlin, her husband Mossimo Giannulli, and many other parents – including actress Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) – were all arrested and charged with trying to get their college-bound children into top universities.

On Friday afternoon, the former Full House star faced sentencing via a Zoom hearing with the federal judge, who didn’t object to the two-month sentence agreed to in the plea agreement, but did speak to the loss amount to the education system.

After a dressing down of the actress, insisting she had to be treated equally to anyone else, the judge stated that she’ll also have to pay a $150,000 fine and do 100 hours of community service. Furthermore, she will need to self-report on November 19 to Victorville Federal Prison Camp – a women’s minimum-security camp – near her home, according to a Boston Globe Twitter account.

Earlier today, the Boston Globe reported that Giannulli was sentenced to five months in prison for taking part in the nationwide college-admissions scam.

“I deeply regret the harm that my actions have caused my daughters, my wife, and others,” Giannulli said in a short statement during the hearing, showing little emotion. “I take full responsibility for my conduct. I am ready to accept the consequences and move forward with the lessons I’ve learned from this experience.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Giannulli will serve two years of supervised release. During that time, he must complete 250 hours of community service. He has also been charged with a fine of $250,000.

Last year, Felicity Huffman served 11 days of a 14-day sentence after pleading guilty to commit mail fraud and paying $15,000 to boost her daughter’s SAT results, hoping to ensure her chances of getting into a college that accepted only students with higher scores.

When news of the likely sentencing was reported by the AP earlier this week, General Hospital star Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) weighed in on Twitter with an alternative penalty, one that would drive home the fact that some kids can’t afford college, let alone buying their way into top universities.

“It would make more sense for both of them to be ordered to give 2 underprivileged students full rides to USC each year for the rest of their lives,” Grahn posted on social media.
