Lin-Manuel Miranda’s charity single called Almost Like Praying was finally made available to the public on Sunday, October 8.
All proceeds for the all-star tune will benefit Hispanic Federation UNIDOS Disaster Relief Fund for Puerto Rico.
The storied Hamilton star dropped the new song in order to support the Puerto Rican people affected by Hurricane Maria.
Miranda’s talented team of superstars who recorded the tune include such musical heavy hitters as Jennifer Lopez, Rita Moreno, and Marc Anthony.
Other sensations singing to the salsa beat are Camila Cabello, Luis Fonsi, John Leguizamo, Gloria Estefan, Gina Rodriguez, Anthony Ramos, and Ana Villafane.
The lyrics, which mention each one of Puerto Rico’s 78 towns and cities, borrows Sondheim’s West Side Story tune, Maria, as a clever way to convey this moving appeal to assist the American island in the Caribbean that’s been ravaged by Hurricane Maria.
How clever and poignant. Who else but Tony-winner Miranda would take a legendary Broadway love story between a New York teen and a Puerto Rican teen and mix it with a contemporary crisis to assist the place his extended family still calls home?
