Knots Landing’s Donna Mills, Constance McCashin Praise William Devane

Knots Landing fans recall that politician-turned-businessman Greg Sumner, played by William Devane, juggled relationships with both Abby (Donna Mills) and Laura (Constance McCashin). Now, his two leading ladies are using social media to share their thoughts on their former leading man!

Knots Landing Stars Reunite

Mills, who joined Knots Landing in its second season, shared on Instagram her fond feelings for Devane. “The great Bill Devane! Handsome, so talented, powerful, funny. I loved working with him. #leadingmen,” Mills posted.

Earlier in the week, McCashin used Twitter to express her feelings for her ex-TV husband. “How much do we love Bill Devane?” McCashin rhetorically tweeted.

As Knots fans recall, Abby went to meet with then-rising politician Greg on behalf of Dallas’ J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), but Greg wasn’t interested in being bought. However, he was drawn to Abby’s beauty, brains, and pragmatic ruthlessness.

Conversely, Laura served as a balance to Greg’s unethical side. She regularly challenged his decisions, prompting him to often do the right thing — or, at least, he’d try to find a compromise.

It’s not unusual for cast departures to occur as long-running series continue. Alas, McCashin vacated America’s most famous cul-de-sac (okay, the ranch where she and Greg lived) in Season 9 after Laura was diagnosed with a fatal illness. Curiously, Laura’s body was misrouted after she supposedly died at a clinic where she’d gone to get treatment. Fans held out hope that door or, in this case, coffin lid was left open so that she’d somehow miraculously return as characters on soaps tend to do. Alas, that was not meant to be.

Later, Greg went on to marry Abby, but their union was more of a merger than a marriage. Devane and Mills first worked together in the 1973 film The Bait in which a policewoman went undercover to trap a rapist! The two actors reprised their roles for the 1997 mini-series Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-De-Sac and again in 2005 for the non-scripted special Knots Landing Reunion: Together Again. Check out Mills’ post and McCashin’s tweet below. And who do you think was Greg’s true love? Sound off in the comments below!
