She’s played everything from a surgical intern to a CIA analyst. And now Katherine Heigl is about to take on yet another role: birthday girl.
Happy Birthday, Katherine Heigl!
And that’s because she was born on November 24, 1978, in Washington, D.C., which means that this talented performer is turning 42 years old today! Heigl started her career as a child model with Wilhelmina Models. She appeared in layouts for Sears and Lord & Taylor catalogs, amongst others, as well as adverts for products like Cheerios.
She made her film debut in the 1992 romantic-drama That Night. Subsequently, she took a small part in Steven Soderbergh’s King of the Hill (1993) before being cast as a lead actress in the 1994 picture My Father the Hero.
In 1995, Heigl appeared in the Steven Seagal vehicle Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, and one year later she landed the starring part in Disney’s made-for-TV film Wish Upon a Star.
Between 1999 and 2002, Heigl played Isabel Evans in the science fiction TV drama, Roswell. During her tenure with the series, Heigl continued to appear in several other properties including the features 100 Girls (2001) and Valentine (2001), and an episode of The Twilight Zone (2002).
In 2003, Heigl had main roles in four made-for-TV films: Vegas Dick, Evil Never Dies, Love Comes Softly, and Wuthering Heights. Two years later, she stared in Romy and Michele: In the Beginning, (the prequel to the 1997 feature Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion), and landed the part for which she would become best known: Grey’s Anatomy’s Isobel “Izzie” Stevens.
For her efforts, Heigl won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She remained with the series until its sixth season (2010).
During her time with the medical serial, Heigl continued to rack up numerous acting credits. Of particular note are the films Knocked Up (2007), 27 Dresses (2008), The Ugly Truth (2009), and Killers (2010).
Among Heigl’s other credits are the animated films The Nut Job (2014), its 2017 sequel, Nutty By Nature, and the series State of Affairs, Doubt, and Suits.
Outside of her acting, Heigl is known for her work and dedication to animal welfare, adoption, bringing awareness to cancer-related issues, and being a spokesperson for Donate Life America.
Heigl has been married to singer Josh Kelly since December 23, 2007. Together the couple has adopted two children, daughters Nancy Leigh and Adalaide Maire Hope, and welcomed son Joshua Bishop (born December 20, 2016).
