While the issue of child abuse was a topic a little too serious to tackle on the old TGIF night of programming for ABC back in the ’90s, one of its most notable stars—John Stamos from Full House—is doing his part to bring light to this serious issue during this coronavirus outbreak, while offering resources for those who need help.
Stamos, who still plays Uncle Jessie on the Netflix spinoff Fuller House and is still beloved by many for his early ’80s run on General Hospital as Blackie Parrish, is a spokesperson for the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. He posted a video to his Instagram account Tuesday with a personal message.
He starts his video with a warm greeting, hoping everyone is safe and healthy during this pandemic and then talks about his involvement as a spokesperson for this important cause.
“I’m worried about children trapped at home with their abusers,” Stamos said. “I’m also worried about families in crisis and survivors without resources. We cannot let this health pandemic become a child abuse pandemic.”
The actor invites people to donate to those in need and protect those who need care against abuse. He explains just $5 supports a life-saving call from an abused child to a licensed child abuse counselor 24/7.
“If you are scared, or you are hurting, please call 1-800-4-A-CHILD and spread this number around, not the virus,” Stamos said. “God bless you all and thank you.”
For those that do need help, they can call or text 1-800-4-A-CHILD to speak to a professional counselor or online chat at childhelphotline.org.
“We care and we are here to help,” he added on his post. The actor’s involvement with Childhelp started more than three decades ago when his mom saw her son’s career begin to flourish and wanted to ensure he always stayed grounded through philanthropy.
Over the years, he has hosted the Childhelp Holiday Party, took groups of children to Disneyland, and attended Childhelp events to lend his celebrity to fundraising.
