Holy Spaceballs! The Goldbergs Meet Star Wars!

The fourth day of May (when people made a lot of ‘May the 4th be with you’ Star Wars jokes) may be over, the tributes to the legendary film continue. This week, The Goldbergs will pay tribute to not only the Steven Spielberg/George Lucas film, but also the Mel Brooks film spoof of it – Spaceballs.

The ABC sitcom, The Goldbergs, is a sitcom set in the 1980s based on the life experiences of the show’s creator Adam Goldberg, who named the lead character after himself.

In the episode airing this week, titled Spaceballs, Adam (Sean Giambrone) wants to desperately impress the parents of his girlfriend Jackie (Roawn Blanchard) but at dinner he mistakes a political debate about then President Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars defense policies for a talk about the movie!

After Adam prattles on and on about the film franchise, he’s completely humiliated for going on about a fictional story instead of a real-life issue.

“My insane Star Wars obsession has been featured heavily in everything I’ve ever written,” said Goldberg in a statement. “In fact, I owe my entire career to George Lucas. My first script Fanboys is what put me on the map. I just wrote about people like me who grew up on Star Wars and have it flowing through our veins. I had no idea there were so many other people out there like me.”

This episode, which airs on Wednesday, May 9th, coincides with the release of Solo, a film set in the past featuring the early days of Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich) and his copilot Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) where they meet Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover).

In addition to Giambrone as Adam, The Goldbergs stars Wendi McLendon-Covey as Beverly Goldberg, Patton Oswalt as adult Adam Goldberg, Troy Gentile as Barry Goldberg, Hayley Orrantia as Erica Goldberg, with George Segal as Pops Solomon and Jeff Garlin as Murray Goldberg.

The Goldbergs airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
