HBO’s In Treatment, Life of Pi Star Irrfan Khan Has Passed Away At 53

Irrfan Khan, a Bollywood icon who successfully transitioned to Hollywood with major roles in noteworthy movies such as Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire, has sadly passed away at just 53.

The popular actor disclosed he had a rare neuroendocrine tumor back in 2018, and his death came following a long battle with the disease. He passed in a Mumbai hospital while surrounded by his wife and two sons.

“It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away,” Khan’s PR agency shared in a statement cited by CNN. “Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him.”

Khan also played math professor Sunil on the third season of HBO’s In Treatment, a character coping with the death of his wife and his subsequent displacement to the U.S.

Priyanka Chopra, who starred with Khan in 7 Khoon Maaf (Seven Sins Forgiven), tweeted a still of the two of them from the movie along with a touching tribute.

“The charisma you brought to everything you did was pure magic,” she wrote. “Your talent forged the way for so many in so many avenues. You inspired so many of us. #IrrfanKhan you will truly be missed. Condolences to the family.”

Born in Rajasthan, India, Khan studied acting at the National School of Drama in New Delhi and established a successful career in Bollywood upon graduation. After some supporting roles in the U.S., he broke through playing a police inspector in the Academy Award-winning Slumdog Millionaire, before going on to roles in movies like Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Jurassic World.

India Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his own tribute on his Twitter page.

“Irrfan Khan’s demise is a loss to the world of cinema and theatre,” he wrote. “He will be remembered for his versatile performances across different mediums.
