Top-notch actress, impeccable comedienne, survivor… Fran Drescher has been called it all and more. And today, she’s gaining yet another descriptor: birthday girl!
And that’s because she was born on September 30, 1957, in New York City, New York, which means that this talented performer is turning 63 years old today! Drescher’s professional acting debut came courtesy of the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever in which she memorably queried if John Travolta’s character was, “As good in bed as [he is] on the dance floor?”
Drescher subsequently gained some acclaim for her work in pictures such as American Hot Wax, Summer of Fear, Ragtime, The Hollywood Knights, This Is Spinal Tap, Doctor Detroit, and Cadillac Man.
She also entered the small screen arena with gigs on series like Who’s the Boss?, Night Court, and ALF. In 1993, Drescher and then-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, created a sitcom entitled The Nanny which they sold to CBS.
For the next six years (and over the course of 146 episodes), Drescher starred as the show’s lead character, Fran Fine, a shop-girl turned cosmetics canvasser who finds herself appointed a childminder to a trio of precocious youths.
During her tenure with the series, Drescher continued to pursue other acting opportunities, which lead to her appearances in Jack (a 1996 film helmed by Francis Ford Coppola), The Beautician and the Beast, and Picking Up the Pieces.
Post-Nanny fame, Drescher appeared in the short-lived sitcom Good Morning Miami, the two seasons and done comedy show Living with Fran, and episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Entourage.
After hosting her own short-lived and eponymous daytime talk show, Drescher re-teamed with Jacobson and created Happily Divorced, a biographical sitcom that aired on TV Land for two seasons.
After that program’s ending, Drescher turned her attention to Broadway. First, she appeared in the revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Then, she began working on her own play: a musical adaption of The Nanny. While still embroiled in the project, Drescher also joined the cast of the NBC sitcom Indebted.
Drescher, having overcome a two-year battle with uterine cancer and created Cancer Schmancer — a book and a movement and spent time traveling the world as the newly appointed Public Diplomacy Envoy for Women’s Health Issues. She is also an ordained minister with the Universal Life Church Monastery.
