Fans of the CBS sitcom Alice watched Philip McKeon grow up before their eyes. Now, there’s some tragic news to report about the star who played Tommy Hyatt on the long-running comedy series.
Variety is reporting that McKeon has passed away at the age of 55, following a long illness. Family spokesperson Jeff Ballard confirmed that the actor died Tuesday morning. “We are all beyond heartbroken and devastated over Phil’s passing,” Ballard said. “His wonderful sense of humor, kindness, and loyalty will be remembered by all who crossed his path in life.”
McKeon was born on November 11, 1964 in Westbury, New York. He played Linda Lavin’s (Alice) son on Alice from 1976 to 1985. His other credits include the TV series ChiPs, Fantasy Island, and The Love Boat, as well as the TV mini-series Favorite Son. He acted in the films Ghoulies 4 and Return To Horror High.
In one episode of Alice, McKeon’s Tommy was able to recite all the names of the U.S. Presidents. After the hit show ended, McKeon took on roles behind the camera as a producer and director. For the last several years, he had been working as the host of his own radio show in Wimberly, Texas. McKeon moved to the Lone Star state to be closer to his family.
Actor Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men) appeared with McKeon on Amazing Stories on NBC in the 1980s in an episode titled No Day at the Beach. “Shared some wonderful moments in the ‘trenches’ with Phil McKeon many moons ago,” Sheen posted on social media. “Over the past few decades, he was always a perfect gentleman and an ebullient spirit. And his goofy af smile, was pure gold. r.i.p. young man. Much much too soon, you cut out.”
