Five Ways CBS Hit Sitcom Mom Could Write Off Anna Faris’s Christy

When the CBS hit comedy Mom returns later this fall for Season 8, the character of Christy will be absent as Anna Faris is not returning to the show. The rest of your favorites will be back, but this will be a huge change for the long-running series.

Mom Returns Without Anna Faris As Christy

While the show has been mum about how Faris will be written out, here are the Top Five ways they can pull it off.

1. Her New Career Forces Move

Christy has been going to law school in recent seasons and preparing for a big career change. It would be easy to just have her finish law school at a more prestigious school out of state or even explain her absence by talking about a new job she was offered across the country.

2. Motherly Bond

Bonnie (Allison Janney) and Christy have had their share of problems over the years, but it doesn’t seem likely that she would throw her daughter out. Instead, the show can play into its title and have Violet (Sadie Calvano) return and invite her mom to take a trip with her—a mother/daughter journey to repair their broken relationship. How could Christy say no?

3. Off the Wagon

The show has never been afraid to go dark, so having Christy away in rehab wouldn’t be out of character. It would serve as a reminder that anyone can fall off the wagon and remind the remaining women that no matter how good their life is right now, all it takes is one drink to change their entire world.

4. Love Rekindled

Back in Season 5, Adam’s brother Patrick, played by TV staple Steven Weber, fell for Christy, and the two dated for a while. The May-October romance seemed to be working until Patrick invited Christy to move in with him, which would mean leaving her home. She tearfully declined because she felt she needed her support group. But Christy is in a better place now, and it makes sense that Patrick would come visit his brother who happened to live with Christy and give them a chance to rekindle the romance. Thus, Christy’s exit could simply be explained by going off to live with Patrick and getting the happy ending she deserves.

5. Ironic Death for Christy

Christy could die in a drunk driving accident. Did we mention the show can go dark? While this seems unlikely, it would definitely create some big story for Bonnie and the others as they cope with the death of someone so close to them by the hand of something that all of them probably did at some point in their lives. This probably won’t happen, but Emmy voters should be prepared in case it does.

Production on Season 8 began last month and the show is expected back on the primetime lineup sometime in November. Mom airs Thursdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
