The Big Bang Theory could’ve been very different if they had decided to keep Kaley Cuoco off the show. In fact, they originally thought Cuoco was too young to play the main female character.
The first pilot of the show featured a character named Katie, who was played by Amanda Walsh. They also did not have the character of Penny, who is now obviously played by Cuoco.
Peter Rother, who is the president at Warner Bros. Television Group, told TV Insider why they decided to change things after the pilot.
“In the first pilot, the character of Penny [originally named Katie] was not as appealing as that proverbial girl next door. It was not the actress [Amanda Walsh] but rather the conceit of the character,” Roth said.
“Fortunately, Nina Tassler, then-president of CBS Entertainment, realized we had something very special and said, ‘Let’s do it again.'”
Once they decided to do the pilot again, they brought Cuoco back.
“I didn’t get [the role of Katie] the first time around. I was too young, which I love saying because I don’t get to say that I’m too young anymore,” Cuoco dished.
“Then, a year later, I heard they were doing it again, and they brought me back in to read for Penny.”
The twelfth and final season of the show is concluding in May with a one-hour finale.
