An explosive new book, Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of The View, takes a backstage look at popular ABC talk show. Audio has surfaced of a dramatic meltdown former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck had over series creator Barbara Walters — now she responds.
In 2006, Walters, Joy Behar, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck along with guest Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters) comprised the panel. The women were discussing a proposed “morning after pill” becoming available as an over-the-counter purchase.
Hasselbeck passionately defended her pro-life stance. An audio clip, accompanied by a video clip of the air show, has been posted by Variety. (Note: The clip includes profanities. Do not click on the link if this bothers you.)
In it, Hasselbeck is shown ripping up her note cards for the episode and is heard walking off set during a commercial break, stating she would not be returning because “this woman [Walters] is driving me nuts.” (Walters had said to Hasselbeck that they must discuss things in a “rational” way.)
Behar compassionately reaches out to Hasselbeck, suggesting she go to her dressing room to talk. Finally, executive producer Bill Geddie convinces the former Survivor competitor to return to the show.
The clip continues with Walters and Hasselbeck embracing on-air and making up. During the off-camera audio portion, Hasselbeck is heard using an expletive more than once. She took to social media today to explain why she was so passionate about the segment.
“This. Just. In: I am quite humanly reactive. I used bad words when frustrated. I was pregnant with Taylor and a big conversation about the value and the lives of the unborn took place at the View. It was a battle -but not of the flesh,” she wrote. To see her entire response, see her Instagram post below.
