Demi Moore, Hollywood Icon, Celebrates Her Birthday

Demi Moore has played everything from a sullen teen to a starry-eyed heroine to a shaved-headed Navy SEAL. And now she’s undertaking yet another role: birthday girl!

Happy Birthday, Demi Moore!

And that’s because Demi Gene Guynes was born on November 11, 1962, in Roswell, New Mexico, which means that this out-of-this-world performer is turning 58 years old today! After being inspired by her next-door neighbor in Los Angeles, 17-year old German actress Natassja Kinski, she enrolled in drama classes and sought employment as a model. At 18, she married rocker Freddy Moore and took his last name.

After working for the Elite Modeling Agency, Moore decided to try her hand at acting. She made her film debut in the 1981 teen drama Choices, which was followed by the science fiction horror picture Parasite (1982).

Moore then joined the cast of ABC’s General Hospital where she originated the part of spunky investigative reported Jackie Templeton – a role now inhabited by actress Kim Delaney.

Moore remained at the daytime drama from January 24, 1982 until April 20, 1984. Subsequently, she appeared in a multitude of feature films including Blame It on Rio (1984), No Small Affair (1984), and St. Elmo’s Fire (1985). The latter proved to be a massive box office success which netted Moore the best reviews of career (up to that point) and made her a certified household name. She and Freddy divorced in 1985.

Moore continued to find success with work in pictures like About Last Night…(1986), One Crazy Summer (1986), and Wisdom (1986). In fall 1986, she made her stage debut in an off-Broadway production of The Early Girl, and two years later she headlined the apocalyptic drama film The Seventh Sign.

In 1989, the actress co-starred alongside Robert De Niro in Neil Jordan’s We’re No Angels, and one year later, she appeared in what would become her most successful film to date: Ghost. The supernatural romantic melodrama, which co-starred Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg became the highest-grossing film of 1990 and earned Moore a Golden Globe Award nomination.

The 1990s proved to be a banner decade for Demi Moore. Though Nothing But Trouble (1991), Mortal Thoughts (1991), and The Butchers Wife (1991) were not widely seen, Moore’s subsequent efforts – A Few Good Men (1992), Indecent Proposal, and Disclosure (1994) – all opened at #1 at the box office and became blockbuster successes.

Among her latter-day work is The Scarlet Letter (1995), Now and Then (1995), Striptease (1996) – for which she was paid a then record-breaking salary of $12.5 million – The Juror (1996), G.I. Jane (1997), and Deconstructing Harry (1997).

Periods of self-imposed retirement followed. She took a lead role in the psychological drama Passion of Mind (2000) and supporting parts in Charlie’s Angeles: Full Throttle (2003) and Bobby (2006). She also began producing films, including all three Austin Powers movies.

Among Moore’s TV credits are episodes of Moonlighting (1989), Tales from the Crypt (1990), Ellen (1997), Will & Grace (2003), as well as a recurring role on Empire. Moore is also the voice actress behind Esmeralda in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Outside of her acting and producing, Moore is known for her activism and support of numerous charities including All Day Foundation, Artists for Peace and Justice, Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, and UNICEF.

Moore is a mother of three daughters whom she shares with her second husband Bruce Willis: Rumer Glenn (born August 16, 1988), Scout LaRue (born July 20, 1991), and Tallulah Belle (born February 3, 1998). She is also a published memoirist – Inside Out (released September 24, 2019) – and a songwriter.
