For months, rumors have been circulating that Days of Our Lives was going to start playing with the fabric of time within its storylines. Now, there’s an update on this tale that’s sure to bring some attention to the NBC serial!
A Complex Twist In Storytelling
Soaps.com has posted a story with quotes from veteran stars Deidre Hall (Marlena) and Drake Hogestyn (John) that tease the upcoming twist in time. “[There’s] a very unusual time jump,” Hall says. “Ron [Carlivati, head writer] has crafted a really complex interesting way of telling the story that makes you hang on with both hands.”
“As actors, we really had to chart and keep a ledger on where we were within the moment and fill in the blanks on what may have transpired,” adds Hogestyn, who believes that the storyline would launch around Thanksgiving and there’d be a big reveal around New York’s Eve.
For the last few years, DAYS has taken advantage of New Year’s Eve to introduced or reintroduce a character, e.g. Stefan O. DiMera (Tyler Christopher; now Brandon Barash) or Jack (Matthew Ashford). Time will tell if another favorite is coming back to ring in the new year. If time is being played with, it begs the question as to whether or not someone will return in November or January – if that’s the direction the show is going in!
Other soaps have played with time in the, er, past. On December 9, 2011, The Young and the Restless did a “backwards” episode in which Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) wed Deacon (Sean Kanan) at the top of the show and as the episode unfolded, viewers learned by the end of it why she felt she needed to tie the knot.
Prior Trailblazers
Gone-but-not-forgotten serials including Guiding Light, One Life to Live, and Dark Shadows have all had characters journey into the past. Exactly what DAYS will be doing remains to be seen. Soap Hub will bring details as they become available. Days of Our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check local listings for airtimes.
